Among other things, the function of the Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services is to respond to requests for criminal history background checks for criminal justice, employment and licensing purposes. This role is tasked to its Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) unit with its Criminal Justice Information System Central Repository where all criminal records including Maryland Arrest Records across Maryland’s 23 counties are maintained.

Only police officials are authorized to conduct a complete Maryland criminal background check with an arrest record at the CJIS. Private employers may conditionally be permitted to receive background checks on prospective employees. Signed release is not necessary but fingerprints are required to run a search. Twenty-two out of its twenty-three counties requires application to be made in person. To retrieve Maryland Arrest Records, applicants must be fingerprinted at a Maryland State Police Station. The fees are $5 for each fingerprinting card and $18 for each state background check. Employer’s authorization number must be produced in applying for employment background checks.
