Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, who was newly appointed to his position, was arrested on an allegation of driving under the influence. The arrest came as the result of a routine traffic stop. In his written apology, the Archbishop explained that he had been visiting with friends for dinner (including a fellow priest visiting from out of the country). The Archbishop was bailed out of the San Diego County Jail the following morning. While I don’t doubt the Archbishop’s sincerity, I hope that he didn’t write his apology to gain any special treatment for the charges.
